Coaching & Consulting

Build your relationships first….then your dentistry. ~ Bob Barkley

The Bob Barkley Club has been from its inception, a mentoring organization. This mentoring occurs in both informal as well as in more organized ways. If you’d like to have Paul Henny assist you with practice leadership, person-centered practice development, CoDiscovery /New patient processes, and or marketing plans, the engagement process is as follows:

If a person were to visit the offices with whom I have coached, they would immediately be impressed by their uniqueness rather than their sameness. And that would be because there is no Paul Henny or Bob Barkley Study Club management model. Instead, I advocate for each person to develop their own management model based upon their own values, priorities, circumstances, and temperament. This is accomplished by first identifying a set of principles which represent the touchstones of the practice going forward. From there, processes which are designed to support and expand upon those principles can be created or refined. What I’m talking about here, is that we need to begin with the creation of a fairly clear Vision Statement representing where you want to see your practice to go over the next ten or more years. From there, a Practice Philosophy Statement can be created – how you’re going to live it. Then, we’ll identify how the Mission (your practice’s purpose) supports and advances both of those documents. Next, we’ll form up a search party -a cluster of like-minded and values-aligned people- who can work together in a coordinated fashion to create your preferred future. This might include finding and developing more team members. This might include facility upgrades or even moving your practice. This might include some on-site training or off-site team development. In sum, the trajectory and the process of intentional change is unique to every practice.

So, how do we begin?

We begin with a phone conference in which you can share with me what’s on your mind. I’m interested in hearing your story -the journey that’s brought you to where you are today, as well as how you feel about it all. In particular, I’m hoping that on some level you’ll be able to share with me the aspects of your work and your life which are currently providing you with the most satisfaction and joy. I’d also like to hear about the aspects of your life which are very heavy on your heart. It would also be helpful for me to hear about some of the mentors and teachers who’ve influenced you the most. And this might include some stories about others who haven’t been very helpful and why. I’d also like to know a little bit about how you perceive health and wellness on a personal level, and how that manifests itself in your life and practice. And if you are comfortable about doing so, we can even talk about the spiritual aspects of your life as well.

At this stage, my goal is two-fold. My first goal is to facilitate your ability to tell me your story in a way that’s respectful of your privacy (It’s important to me that I don’t cause you to feel like I’m probing into areas of your life which are beyond your current comfort zone). Secondly, I’d like to invite you to ask me questions – lots of them- because I believe that it’s critically important that we’re able to make a mutually respectful and meaningful connection, which is based upon shared values, priorities, and a vision that we can both understand going forward on a fairly deep level.

After we’ve completed this phone conference, we have the option of deciding not to proceed any further. If we come to that decision, there will be no fee for taking this initial step.

Optional:

You can elect to fly to Roanoke, VA and spend a day at my practice as well as dinner at my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains with my wife Betsy, so that we can get to know each other a little better. If you choose to do take this step, there will be no cost to you beyond your airfare or other travel expenses to Roanoke in addition to the cost of a hotel room for one or two nights depending on the time of your arrival. My goal here is for you to more thoroughly explore who I am, what I believe, and how I personally do things, so that you can make a more informed choice as to whether or not there’s a feeling of synergy between us.

The Next Step:

The next step has me visiting your practice and your community. No person or practice functions as an island, so I’ve found my ability to understand the socio-cultural-economic environment in which a person lives to be an extremely helpful piece of information going forward. It’s my hope that on this trip I’ll be able to meet some of the significant people in your life. I’d especially like to meet your care team, and to whatever degree is comfortable, meet your spouse or S.O., as well as witness your office systems as they function in real life. Additionally, I’d like to say upfront that the intention of this trip is not for me to judge or measure you as a person, business, or as a practice. Rather, the purpose of this trip is to allow me to learn more about you, and to see if there’s a way we can successfully work together over an extended period of time.

The Final Step

The final step is a video conference wherein we’ll discuss my perspective of things as well as the possibilities, and how I might be able to facilitate their realization. It’s my hope that my comments will stimulate you to ask a lot of questions, and if at the end of those discussions, we agree that working together is a good idea, then we can start to lay out the logistics and cost structure. Since every practice represents a unique situation, I don’t have a standard coaching or consulting fee. Some doctors need to converse with me several times a week, where others prefer a once-a-month check-in video conference.

If you are interested in learning more about this process, please send me an email at paul@paulhennydds.com and we can arrange a time to connect by phone.

Great Forum

What a great forum for sharing the wisdom we have been privileged to gain from those who came before us. Hearing that wisdom expressed in the language of today is so important. ~ Mary Osborne
