L.D. Pankey studied at the University of Louisville in the 1920’s and upon graduation took over a practice in the small farming community of New Castle, Kentucky located in Central Kentucky about 45 minutes from Louisville. He had been practicing there for only a brief period of time when his mother, who lived in Evansville, Indiana wrote him a letter describing what a horrible experience it had been for her to have all of her teeth taken out and dentures placed by a local dentist.
This letter, and Dr. Pankey’s day-to-day experience of either removing some or all of his patient’s teeth, caused him to re-think what he wanted to do with his life an career. From that moment, began a career-long journey for Dr. Pankey to develop himself into one of the first restorative dentists with a mission to help his patient’s save their teeth – a truly revolutionary concept considering the times.
Dr. Pankey then moved to Coral Gables, Florida a bustling new town just outside of Miami. His studies lead him to Northwestern University, as well as Paris, France to study under an American dentist practicing restorative concepts there. Dr. Pankey, over time was involved in the study of occlusion and integrated his learnings into his restorative techniques. He also became an avid student of human behavior and psychology, and combined his deep understanding of people with his folksy charm to render much success both clinically and financially.
The Pankey Institute has evolved into a premier world renowned organization based in Key Biscayne, Florida. It has taught dentists from over 44 countries world-wide and offers a constantly updated curriculum which blends the latest advancements in clinical dentistry, with self-knowledge, communication, and predictable practice management approaches.
